World Medical Association adopts policy to combat false health information

The World Medical Association, which represents physicians worldwide, has adopted its first policy focused specifically on false health information.

Delegates from medical associations voted for it at the group’s annual assembly in the Netherlands.

The policy was developed by medical associations in Canada and France, where doctors face similar challenges.

It recommends awareness campaigns, measures to limit profit from disinformation, and disciplinary action when health professionals spread inaccurate information.

It also calls for social media companies to provide ways to report harmful content quickly and for AI-generated content to be clearly labelled.

False health advice can lead patients to be misdiagnosed or harmed by treatments, while also weakening trust in doctors and medical research.

The policy sets ethical standards for physicians worldwide, but it is not legally binding.
