France plans cheaper diesel from strategic reserves starting November 1

France plans to release 10 million barrels of diesel from its strategic reserves, with deliveries starting in late October or early November.

The government says the move could lower diesel prices by up to 18 cents per litre from November 1.

Fuel distributors will receive the discounted supplies in proportion to their market share, so the reserves will cover only part of what most companies buy.

TotalEnergies, which is set to receive nearly a quarter of the released fuel, has promised diesel prices of €2.15 to €2.20 per litre.

The government says it will check prices and profit margins, and could set limits by decree if a distributor does not pass on the savings.

It also plans to provide small rural stations with cash-flow support so they can reduce prices too.
