Eligible student households may pay no Council Tax, but must apply
The government says a household may pay no Council Tax if everyone living there qualifies as a full-time student.
This applies to students in England, Scotland and Wales, where Council Tax helps fund local services.
For many courses, full-time study means at least 21 hours of study a week for at least one year.
Some people under 20 studying for qualifications up to A level may also qualify if their course lasts at least three months and involves at least 12 hours of study each week.
The exemption is not automatic, so eligible residents need to apply for it.
They can search GOV.UK for how to apply for a Council Tax discount or contact their local council.
The council will assess the application and determine whether the household qualifies.
The government says households in which everyone is a qualifying full-time student do not have to pay Council Tax.
Eligible households must apply; the discount is not automatic.
