Book clubs choose varied October 2026 reads, with two picking the same novel

A roundup of book clubs’ October 2026 reading picks features novels and nonfiction across several genres.

Eclectix and the Audacious Book Club both chose Deesha Philyaw’s The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman.

Eclectix, created by Dawnshaeé Reid, prioritizes Black authors and offers in-person meetings in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as virtual ones.

The Audacious Book Club is selected by author Roxane Gay and aims to highlight writers sharing what it calls authentic and necessary perspectives.

Other featured groups include Subtle Asian Book Club, whose October pick is Mohammed El-Kurd’s essay collection on resistance to anti-Palestinian racism.

The choices range from essays to horror and romance, reflecting the clubs’ different interests rather than a single October theme.

Readers can join virtual activities, which the roundup says include author chats or discussions.

Lucky me, I was an early reader of this one over the summer and I instantly wanted to talk about it with the book club – so now I’m making my dreams come true!

Next month in the Audacious Book Club, we’re also talking about The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman by Deesha Philyaw. I hope you’ll join us at The Audacity to discuss this wonderful novel throughout the month of October.
