AI fuels China’s historical dramas, raising concerns about accuracy
AI tools let smaller teams create historical scenes that once needed big budgets.
This is helping the number of AI dramas grow quickly in China.
But a scene that looks real may still be historically wrong.
Producers need to check historical details so viewers can tell fact from fiction.
AI tools are lowering the cost and technical barriers to producing historical dramas in China, allowing smaller teams and individual creators to make complex scenes.
DataEye reported that China’s AI drama and animation market exceeded RMB 22 billion ($3.29 billion) in the first five months of 2026 and projected it would reach RMB 40 billion ($5.98 billion) for the full year.
More than 600 million people in China used AI short dramas in the first half of 2026, while 221,900 new AI short dramas were released from January to June.
