NS&I raises some UK savings bond rates above 5%

The UK government-backed National Savings and Investments provider has raised rates on its British savings bonds.

These bonds lock money away for one, two, three or five years, and the new rates range from 4.99% to 5.17%.

The two-, three- and five-year bonds now pay more than 5%.

Savers can put up to £1 million into each bond issue, and NS&I says the Treasury backs all savings above the amount most banks guarantee.

But the money cannot be withdrawn before the bond term ends, so savers may want to keep some cash in an account they can access.

Some other providers offer higher rates, although the best deals can come from less-well-known institutions.

Savings rates may change or deals may be withdrawn when providers have attracted enough deposits.
