Canadian investor and philanthropist Stephen Jarislowsky dies at 101

Stephen Jarislowsky, a Canadian investment manager and philanthropist, has died at age 101.

Born in Germany in 1925, he later moved to Montreal and co-founded the investment firm Jarislowsky Fraser in 1955.

Scotiabank bought the firm in 2018 for $950 million.

Jarislowsky became known for pressing company leaders to protect shareholders’ rights and improve corporate accountability.

He co-founded the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance in 2002 to help shareholders hold executives to account.

He also gave millions of dollars to support research, education and democracy at Canadian universities.

His work helped shape debates about how companies should be run and how investors should be treated.
