Jet-powered Russian drones challenge Kyiv’s volunteer air-defence crews

Volunteer air-defence crews help protect Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, from Russian drone attacks.

They use machine guns at positions around the city and work as one layer of Ukraine’s air defences.

For years, these teams were effective against slower, propeller-driven Shahed drones, which Russia began launching in large numbers in late 2022.

Since the summer, Russia has increasingly used jet-powered drones that crews say can fly at about 600 kilometres per hour and reach heights of up to 10 kilometres.

Those speeds and heights can put the drones beyond the reach of the volunteers’ guns, which were designed for slower targets.

Ukraine’s interception rate for the new drones is between 50% and 60%.

The crews continue to defend the city, but the changing threat is making their work more difficult.
