Police clear Ceuta’s last major migrant encampment
Police began clearing the Guano site in Ceuta, a Spanish city on the North African coast, on Sunday morning.
It was the last large encampment there, with more than 500 migrants reported to have stayed at the site.
Many had arrived during a large influx on July 30 and 31, and had moved to Guano after police cleared camps on nearby beaches.
People at the site had been waiting to be taken either to Morocco for a voluntary return or to a temporary reception center while asylum procedures were handled.
About 100 of those staying there were reported to be minors who had asked to be moved to reception centers.
Clearing the site does not remove all migrants from the streets: hundreds remain in neighborhoods or are sheltering in hills or homes.
Some avoid registration because they hope to reach mainland Spain, while others prefer to return to Morocco; the account says asylum claims are likely to be rejected and a final rejection can lead to a five-year expulsion order.
Spanish National Police deployed at El Guano in Ceuta on Sunday morning to clear the city’s last large migrant encampment.
More than 20 police vans began arriving shortly after 8:00.
Fewer than 1,000 Moroccans were camping at the site, including more than 500 who had remained there and around 100 minors.
The operation follows earlier clearances at the Trampolín and Benítez beaches, where about 1,700 people were taken away.
The clearance does not remove all migrants from Ceuta, as hundreds remain elsewhere in the city or in nearby hills.
