South Korea growth fund offers a loss buffer but no guarantee

South Korea’s second public-participation growth fund is nearing the end of sales as a recent fall in the KOSPI has raised concerns about losses.

The fund pools public investment to back companies in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

It invests in a mix of listed and unlisted shares and other assets, so the stock index’s fall does not directly show how the fund will perform.

Government and fund managers take losses before ordinary investors, using money set aside as junior investment.

That buffer varies by sub-fund, and losses beyond it can reduce investors’ original capital.

The fund has raised about 4.525 trillion won, 75.4% of its 6 trillion won target, after eight business days of sales.

Investors cannot redeem their units early because the fund has a five-year term, though they may be able to sell on an exchange if it is listed; a sale is not guaranteed and could be below the fund’s stated value.

Sales are due to close on October 15, and the fund’s managers say it is not a principal-guaranteed product.
