Weather and supply shortages push up prices of pulses in India

Prices of several pulses are rising across India, including pigeon pea, black gram and chickpeas.

Pigeon pea prices have climbed as dry, adverse weather threatens crops in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, while supplies are limited.

Its national average retail price was ₹127.90 per kg on October 11, and prices are moving towards highs reached in 2023-24.

Black gram prices are also up, partly because shipments from Myanmar are limited and delays at Chennai port have reduced stocks available for delivery.

Chickpea prices have risen ahead of the winter sowing season, with demand from traders, mills and festivals adding to pressure.

A weaker rupee is also making imported pulses more costly, while domestic production is expected to fall.

The outlook for the next crop is uncertain, as low soil moisture and insufficient rain could affect chickpea sowing in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
