Google begins phased Android app verification rules in four countries

Google has started changing how some apps are distributed on Android.

Since September 30, 2026, developers listing apps in seven major app stores must complete Google’s verification process in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

Google is using these countries to test the rules before a wider rollout.

The changes are intended to improve protection for Android users, but they do not end sideloading.

For now, apps offered through other stores or as APK downloads from developers’ websites are not covered by these limits.

Google says the rules will expand to all third-party Android app stores in 2027, and that broader changes will come in 2027 and beyond.

Independent developers who distribute APKs from their own websites will be able to register with Google.
