Piedmont governor opposes proposed mosque in Turin

Piedmont governor Alberto Cirio has spoken against a proposed mosque on Via Bologna in Turin.

The city has approved the project, which its proponents say would include a 20-metre minaret.

Cirio described it as more than a place of prayer and culture and alleged that it would be a centre for the spread of Islam, funded by Morocco’s government.

He said he supports freedom of religion but opposes this project in its proposed form and would do what he could to stop it.

Speaking at a Forza Italia convention in Milan, he said the party should not follow the anti-mosque campaign of Roberto Vannacci.

Cirio invoked the late party leader Silvio Berlusconi’s belief that all people are equal and should be respected.
