Andrea Štaka to direct historical drama ‘Ibicaba: Promised Paradise’

Director Andrea Štaka is making a historical drama called “Ibicaba: O Paraíso Prometido,” based on a novel by Eveline Hasler and real events at a farm in rural São Paulo.

Ella Rumpf, Júlio Andrade and Ana Flávia Cavalcanti are set to star.

Set in 1855, the story follows a Swiss working-class single mother who travels to Brazil hoping for a better life.

Instead, she faces debt, surveillance and exploitation in a society structured by slavery.

Her story intersects with Inocência, an enslaved Black woman who has healing knowledge and finds ways to resist.

The film is being produced by Brazil’s MyMama Entertainment with Swiss and Brazilian partners, and historical research is being carried out with historian Caróu Oliveira.

Filming is planned for next year in Switzerland and Cordeirópolis, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
