Switzerland fully meets Basel bank capital standards
Switzerland fully met international standards for banks’ leverage ratios, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision said.
Australia, Japan and South Korea also received the highest rating, while Canada and the United Kingdom were rated largely compliant.
A leverage ratio compares a bank’s core capital with its total exposure, limiting how much it can borrow.
The rule acts as a safeguard against excessive bank debt and complements other capital requirements that account for risk.
The committee’s review checked how consistently countries had put Basel standards into their national rules, and its publication completed the first cross-country review of leverage ratios.
The committee has also begun reviews of revised Basel III rules for risk-weighted assets, which it said started in the first half of 2026.
