Strong magnetic fields may let white dwarfs exceed a known mass limit
A white dwarf is the dense core left behind when a star runs out of fuel and sheds its outer layers.
Without strong magnetic fields or rapid rotation, it is expected to stay below about 1.4 times the sun’s mass.
The report says strong magnetic fields could let some white dwarfs grow beyond that limit.
This could change how scientists understand these stellar remnants.
