Family says it cannot reach detained CJP founder as grandmother’s rites are delayed

Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, was detained by Delhi Police in New Delhi on Saturday.

He had travelled from Mumbai with party colleagues for a planned protest seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged problems with electoral rolls.

His grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, died at her home in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district after a prolonged illness.

Delhi Police says it told Dipke about her death and offered help for him to travel home.

His mother, Anita Dipke, says the family has been unable to contact him and disputes the police account.

The family postponed the last rites, which had been scheduled for Sunday morning, until he could return.

An Executive Magistrate ordered Dipke and two other party leaders released after their preventive detention, but the accounts do not say whether he had returned home.
