Turkey’s first 1,000-megawatt offshore wind project may cost $3 billion
Turkey’s first 1,000-megawatt offshore wind tender is expected in early 2027.
The project is part of a renewable energy scheme and would develop wind power at sea, which needs different equipment and infrastructure from land-based wind farms.
The offshore investment could cost about $3 billion, compared with about $1 billion for a land-based project of the same capacity.
The investment could create work for shipyards and equipment makers and help build a new wind industry in Turkey.
Development and construction could take four to six years, with the project expected to come online in stages between 2030 and 2032.
The sector expects tenders for at least 1.5 gigawatts of wind power each year through 2035, while faster coordination on permits and other processes could help avoid delays and reduce reliance on imported gas and coal.
Türkiye’s first 1,000-megawatt offshore wind project could require about $3 billion in investment, Turkish Wind Energy Association President Ibrahim Erden said.
The project is expected to be tendered in the first quarter of 2027.
Development and implementation could take four to six years, with a gradual rollout between 2030 and 2032.
Erden said offshore wind could create opportunities for shipyards, equipment makers and other industries.
The sector expects at least 1.5 gigawatts of wind energy YEKA tenders to be announced annually through 2035.
