Fire damages 305 homes in Indonesia’s South Bangka, affecting 1,800 people

A fire on Saturday, October 10, damaged 305 homes in Dusun Serdang, in South Bangka, Indonesia’s Bangka Belitung Islands.

The disaster affected 450 families, or 1,800 people, and also destroyed 50 buildings used to raise swiftlet birds.

About 500 people were staying in evacuation shelters at a local school and mosque, while others went to relatives’ homes.

The fire has been put out, but cooling work is continuing because many homes were built with wooden boards.

Officials have not confirmed the cause.

They said the fire may have spread from burning land near the settlement, helped by strong winds and dry conditions.

Damage to homes is estimated at 2 billion rupiah, and officials are still assessing impacts on public facilities.
