Fatty liver treatment rises sharply among younger people in Germany

More people in Germany are being treated for fatty liver disease, with the sharpest rise among people under 40.

The share of people under 40 treated for it grew by 59.5% between 2016 and 2025, according to health insurance billing data.

Overall, 3.13 million people were treated for the condition in the latest figures, compared with 2.42 million in 2016.

Fatty liver occurs when too much fat builds up in liver cells and is often linked to excess weight, type 2 diabetes, too little exercise or heavy drinking.

It can go unnoticed for a long time, but inflammation may lead to permanent liver damage.

Doctors may be finding more cases because they now check the livers of people with obesity or diabetes more often.

If found early, the condition can often improve with regular exercise, a balanced diet, less alcohol and, for people with excess weight, lasting weight loss.
