Valenciennes makes public transport free amid rising fuel prices

Valenciennes, in northern France, has made public transport free since 1 October as fuel prices rise.

The scheme covers nearly 350,000 residents across 82 communes, including people using buses, trams and shuttles.

Fuel prices are around €2.40 a litre, and 80% of journeys in the area are made by car.

Local officials hope free transport will help people save money and encourage some drivers to leave their cars behind.

Passenger numbers have risen by 15% since the scheme began.

The measure costs more than €700,000, and it could be extended in 2027.
