Martin Schulz condemns eviction of 87-year-old Spanish tenant

Martin Schulz, a former president of the European Parliament, discussed Spanish politics and housing in an interview.

He condemned the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman who could not afford a rent increase and was removed from the home where she had lived for decades.

Schulz said evictions like this happen beyond Spain, but her case particularly shocked him.

He also backed Pedro Sánchez’s decision to call an early election and said he believed Sánchez would win.

Schulz said fear about an uncertain future is widespread among both young and older people.

He warned that fear, including concern about immigration, should be taken seriously so it does not turn into hatred of immigrants.

He said the left should respond with courage, and argued that Spain’s elections matter beyond the country.
