Carter Faith Brings Unsettling Stories to Country Music
Carter Faith is a country songwriter whose music pairs a clear country voice with lyrics about difficult subjects, including mental health, sex and drugs.
Her album Cherry Valley and its deluxe version, Cherry Valley Forever, place those themes in an imagined, dreamlike setting.
Faith says she likes to confuse people and make them uncomfortable, and her music video for “Pearl Handled Pistol” reflects that approach with bloodied, spur-heeled shoes beside a dead body.
The album earned an Album of the Year nomination from the Academy of Country Music and was recognized on a list of the year’s best country albums.
In the year after its release, Faith opened for Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, Shaboozey and Post Malone.
She is also up for a Country Music Association Award and is considered a possible Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Country Album.
Next month, she is due to make her acting debut in Netflix’s Heartland, playing a young country artist who mysteriously disappears.
