São Paulo warns of flooding as heavy rain hits the state

São Paulo city entered a flood alert on Sunday because of heavy rain.

The alert covers the city’s north, east, west, southeast and south, as well as its central area and two major expressways.

By Sunday, October had recorded 53 millimeters of rain in the city, about 47 percent of the amount expected for the month.

Across São Paulo state, officials had issued 22 warnings for heavy rain, strong winds, lightning and hail by 5 p.m.

Storm damage in several towns included fallen trees, flooded streets and damaged homes; in Cruzeiro, about 50 homes were affected and one person had to leave home.

The state’s Civil Defense agency provided humanitarian aid to Cruzeiro.

More heavy showers and possible flooding are forecast for Monday, October 12, so officials advise people to avoid flooded roads and seek shelter during lightning and strong winds.
