Stalled gut bacteria linked to higher type 1 diabetes risk in children
Researchers tracked gut bacteria in children who already had genes linked to higher type 1 diabetes risk.
Children whose gut bacteria stopped changing early had about three times the risk of an immune attack or diagnosis compared with children whose bacteria matured sooner.
The study found a link, but it cannot show that the bacteria caused the disease.
Following children over time may help researchers find clues that a single sample would miss.
