Mary Fowler stays in Australia to support injured partner Nathan Cleary

Mary Fowler, a forward for Australia’s Matildas and Manchester City, has been in Sydney with her partner, rugby league player Nathan Cleary.

Cleary said Fowler flew to Australia to care for him while he recovers from major surgery.

He broke his left leg and also had surgery on his right foot after Penrith’s preliminary final defeat to Newcastle.

Fowler withdrew from the Matildas’ squad, and coach Joe Montemurro had described her absence as a private matter.

Cleary’s post confirmed she was away from the team to be with him.

The Matildas lost 4-2 to Germany without Fowler, and she will also miss their friendly against Haiti in France this week.

Manchester City’s next Women’s Super League match is against Brighton in seven days.
