Russia proposes raising maximum military service age for women to 50

The Russian government has sent a bill to the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, to raise the maximum age for women’s military service from 45 to 50.

It also proposes raising the reserve age limit to 55 for women officers and to 50 for women with other ranks.

The bill’s authors say some women reach the current age limit before they have served long enough to qualify for a pension or other benefits.

They say this can happen to women who serve in places where service does not count toward a preferential pension.

The government also says women make up most personnel in military medical units, including some who are near the current age limit.

The proposal comes amid Russia’s war with Ukraine.

The bill has been submitted to parliament, but its outcome is not stated.
