46 orangutans rescued from forest fires in West Kalimantan
Fires in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, have forced 46 orangutans from their forest habitat since August.
Conservation officials and the YIARI wildlife group rescued them in Ketapang and Kayong Utara districts.
The fires destroyed forest cover and separated habitat areas, leaving some orangutans isolated in plantations with little food or space to move.
On October 9, eight orangutans judged healthy began moving to Batu Nyambu Protected Forest in Ketapang.
The roughly 23,000-hectare area was chosen because it has forest cover, food and water, and links to other protected forests.
Other rescued orangutans are still receiving intensive care for burns, malnutrition, anemia and other health problems.
Officials say the move is not a final solution, and call for regular patrols, community outreach and planting trees that provide food to protect the animals and their habitat.
Forty-six Bornean orangutans were rescued from forest and land fires in West Kalimantan between August and 9 October 2026.
The rescue effort was carried out by the West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency and the YIARI foundation.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
At least 46 orangutans have been rescued from burned habitat. Meanwhile, providing safe habitat remains a continuing challenge for efforts to conserve these protected animals.
Translocation is not the final solution. As long as fires continue and habitat remains threatened, rescue efforts must be accompanied by protection of the remaining forests.
Wildlife rescue efforts do not stop at rescue and translocation. Both are part of a broader conservation strategy.
These steps are needed to support the survival of orangutans after release and protect their habitat from future threats.
