India’s Wholesale Inflation Reaches 9.92% on Food and Fuel
India tracks how much prices change for goods sold in large quantities.
This measure is called wholesale inflation.
In August, wholesale inflation rose to 9.92% from 9.78% in July.
Fuel and power prices increased the most, especially prices for mineral oils and crude petroleum.
Food prices also rose compared with July.
Prices of manufactured goods reached their highest level in the current data series.
Prices for basic metals grew more slowly, while electricity prices fell.
The government said fuel, food, metals, chemicals and other goods helped push inflation higher.
A report also linked some pressure to higher global crude and fertiliser costs after disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
India’s wholesale price inflation rose to 9.92% in August 2026 from 9.78% in July.
Fuel and power inflation increased to 22.93% from 20.05%, led by higher mineral oil and crude petroleum prices.
Food index inflation rose to 7.05% from 6.65%, while manufactured-products inflation reached a series high of 8.37%.
Primary Articles inflation eased to 7.76% from 8.52%, while electricity moved into 1.73% deflation.
The government revised June’s wholesale inflation to 9.97% from the earlier provisional estimate of 9.87%.
