Tripura TMP ties village poll alliance to tripartite accord implementation
In the Indian state of Tripura, two political parties are deciding whether to work together for upcoming elections.
The parties are the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party, also called the TMP.
The elections are for 587 village committees in a tribal council, and they are scheduled for the first half of September.
The TMP's leader, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, says his party might not team up with the BJP.
He says the government has not kept its promises from an agreement signed in March 2024.
That agreement was supposed to protect the rights of indigenous tribal people.
Tripura's chief minister, Manik Saha, says the BJP still wants an alliance and its doors are open.
The TMP held a big meeting with about 300 leaders to decide what to do next.
Earlier talks in Delhi did not end with an agreement.
Everyone is waiting to see whether the two parties will join forces for the elections.
TMP supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma said his party could reconsider its alliance with the BJP for the village committee elections if the tripartite accord signed on March 2, 2024 is not implemented.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said talks between the BJP and the TMP are still on and that the BJP's doors remain open for an alliance.
Elections to 587 village committees of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled in the first half of September.
In the last TTAADC elections, the TMP won 24 of the 28 seats while the BJP won only four.
Around 300 TMP leaders attended an organisational meeting in Agartala on Monday to decide the party's strategy after talks with BJP national president Nitin Nabin in Delhi failed to reach an agreement.
