Panel Recommends National Importance Status for Auroville
A group of important people in the government, called a parliamentary panel, has suggested that the Auroville Foundation in Pondicherry should be given a special status called 'Institution of National Importance'.
This is because the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been supporting Auroville for a long time.
The panel thinks that since UNESCO has been endorsing Auroville's work towards promoting peace and understanding among people from different countries, the Indian government should also recognize its importance.
The panel has asked the government to change a law from 1988 to make this happen.
