Tejpal gets 10 years jail for raping staffer · thehansindia.com

A very important court in India, the Bombay High Court at Goa, made a big decision about a man named Tarun Tejpal.

He used to be the boss of a news magazine called Tehelka.

The court said he hurt a woman who worked with him many years ago, in 2013.

The woman said he hurt her inside an elevator at a luxury hotel in Goa during a big event his magazine held called ThinkFest.

Earlier, a lower court had said he was not guilty, but this higher court changed that decision.

Now the court says he must go to jail for 10 years and also pay fines.

He was given two weeks before he has to go to jail, so he can ask an even higher court, the Supreme Court, to help him.

Mr. Tejpal says he did nothing wrong and that the case is because of people who were angry at his magazine's stories.

The higher court judges said the lower court made a mistake and relied on wrong ideas about how people who are hurt should behave.

The police must also report to the court about the fines.

Former editor of investigative magazine Tehelka

“They have framed me too, but I still got acquitted. Despite that, now it depends on journalists to go and ask questions. You know Umar Khalid has been in jail for 6 years. You know Sharjeel Imam is there, you know Surendra Gadling is in jail in different cases.”

“"The case against him stemmed from political revenge and from work done by Tehelka during his time as editor."”
