Five top-10 firms lose ₹1 lakh crore; TCS drops most
Imagine India's ten biggest companies, and each one has a big price tag showing how much the whole company is worth.
Last week, five of these ten companies saw their price tags shrink by a giant amount together - about ₹1 lakh crore.
The company that lost the most value was TCS, which makes computer software for other businesses.
This happened because investors felt worried: oil became more expensive, there was uncertain and tense news around the world, and people were nervous about what would happen next.
When investors worry, they sell their shares, and that pushes company values down.
But not every company lost money.
Five other big companies, including LIC and Bharti Airtel, actually became more valuable, adding about ₹55,149 crore together.
Even with the losses, Reliance Industries is still the most valuable company in India.
Overall, the Indian stock market had a slightly down week.
Five of India's top-10 most valued firms saw their combined market valuation erode by about ₹1 lakh crore last week.
TCS suffered the biggest drop, losing ₹34,263.28 crore to fall to ₹8,53,506.85 crore.
The BSE Sensex declined 489.92 points (0.62%) and the NSE Nifty fell 204.65 points (0.83%) during the week.
Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, LIC and Hindustan Unilever together added ₹55,149.45 crore, with LIC the biggest gainer at ₹26,438.49 crore.
Religare Broking's Ajit Mishra attributed the decline to elevated crude oil prices, renewed geopolitical uncertainty and mixed global cues.
