India-Mauritius Five-Year Fuel Pact Promises Security, Price Protection
India and Mauritius agreed to work together on fuel for five years.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited will supply Mauritius with all the petrol, diesel and aircraft fuel it needs to import.
The governments say this should help Mauritius receive fuel more reliably.
They also say it can protect the country from sudden changes in fuel prices.
The agreement was exchanged during Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s visit on August 20 and 21.
The two countries will also cooperate on training and biofuels.
A new storage facility for marine fuel is being developed in Port Louis.
The deal gives India a larger role in Mauritius’ energy supply.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Mauritius’ State Trading Corporation signed a five-year fuel supply agreement.
IOCL will meet Mauritius’ entire import requirement for petrol, high-speed diesel and aviation turbine fuel.
The governments said the pact will provide assured supplies and reduce Mauritius’ exposure to fuel-price volatility.
The agreement makes India an anchor fuel supplier for Mauritius and expands its strategic and economic role in the Indian Ocean region.
A broader oil and gas partnership covers training, capacity building, biofuels cooperation and a 27,500-tonne marine bunker fuel facility in Port Louis.
