Kolkataye Sherlock is a detective film set mainly in contemporary Calcutta.

It is inspired by Sherlock Holmes but does not simply copy his original story.

Vikram Chatterjee plays Jyotishko, a Bengali man who enjoys Holmes and is good at noticing clues.

His friend Sharanjit helps him, creating a relationship similar to Sherlock Holmes and Watson.

Sharanjit is played by Bonny Sengupta and works in the Kolkata Police detective department.

Arunima Ghosh plays Dr Meghamala, a postmortem doctor who is important to the story.

The film also visits the Edwardian era in 1905.

Director Arindam Sil wanted to explore how Holmes-like skills might work in a different city and culture.

Quotes

Arindam Sil

Filmmaker and actor directing Kolkataye Sherlock

“Sherlock Holmes is so strongly associated with Victorian London that we almost take that world for granted. I wanted to take the essence of that character — the observation, deduction and curiosity — and ask what happens when those qualities exist in a completely different environment,”

“Why should Sherlock get stuck only in London or in the UK? I mean, Calcutta can definitely be an incredible, what I would say, an incredible backdrop to rediscover Sherlock and under the milieu of contemporary Bengali times and culture,”
