Tamil Nadu plans to give gold rings to babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres.

The program is called Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram.

Each baby is expected to receive a one-gram gold ring and baby-care items.

About 442,000 babies may receive the gifts.

Joyalukkas offered to make and supply the rings for just one paisa in service charges.

The government will pay separately for the gold itself.

Other jewellery companies asked for much higher service charges.

The program is scheduled to begin on September 15, after the government issues the work order.
