Farmers Begin Weeklong Chandigarh Protest Over Crop MSP
Hundreds of farmers have started a seven-day protest near Chandigarh.
They parked tractors and put up tents on one side of a road leading to the airport.
The protest is organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a group of farmer organizations.
The farmers want guaranteed prices for all crops.
They also want changes to several laws and decisions affecting Punjab.
Police and other officials have increased security at the site.
Officials are trying to keep some traffic moving between Mohali and Chandigarh.
A separate farmers’ group, Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), is holding protests in 17 Punjab districts over other demands.
Hundreds of farmers blocked one side of a major Chandigarh entry road for a protest running until September 7.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha is demanding legally guaranteed minimum support prices for all crops based on the Dr Swaminathan Commission report.
Farmers have parked tractor-trailers, pitched tents and set up a stage at the Sector 48 protest site.
Security has been increased, while authorities said they would try to keep one side of the two-way road open.
The SKM also seeks changes involving Punjab’s river waters, the Bhakra Beas Management Board, the Dam Safety Act and the Disaster Management Act of 2024.
