India's Independence Day was coming soon, and a state called Himachal Pradesh decided to give some prisoners a special gift.

The gift was a shorter time in jail, which is called a remission.

The government looked at all 1,025 people who are serving time in the state's jails.

It found 433 prisoners who behaved well and deserved the shorter sentence.

Only three of those prisoners will be able to go home right away because of this gift.

The other prisoners will go home a little bit sooner than before.

How much sooner depends on how long their sentence was.

Prisoners with the longest sentences, like life in prison, get three months off.

Prisoners with very short sentences get only 15 days off.

But some prisoners cannot get this gift, like people convicted of crimes against children or drug crimes.
