Thane Collects 18.6 Tonnes of Ganeshotsav Offering Waste
During Ganeshotsav, many people in Thane immersed their Ganesha idols in water.
After the first round of immersions, workers collected 18.6 tonnes of flower and offering waste.
More than 20,000 idols were immersed during this period.
The city is sorting the waste instead of letting it reach lakes, rivers or creeks.
Organic waste is being sent to special composting facilities.
Plastic bags and other non-biodegradable items are separated from the organic waste.
The plastic is sent for recycling or safe disposal.
Officials are asking people to use special bins for nirmalya waste.
The Thane Municipal Corporation collected approximately 18.6 tonnes of nirmalya waste after the first phase of idol immersions.
A total of 20,703 Lord Ganesha idols were immersed during the one-and-a-half-day immersion period.
The collected organic waste is being processed at facilities in Hiranandani Estate, Ritu Park and Kausa.
Plastic and other non-biodegradable materials made up roughly 3% of the collected waste.
The Thane Municipal Corporation is sending separated plastic to Material Recovery Facilities for recycling and safe disposal.
