Karnataka to introduce AI in 1,642 government high schools

The Karnataka School Education Department has decided to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a skill subject in 1,642 government high schools starting from the 2026-27 academic year.

This initiative aims to improve technological literacy, problem-solving abilities, and employability among students.

The AI course will replace existing vocational subjects like Beauty and Wellness, Retail, and Fashion Design.

The department has issued a circular directing School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs) to complete the recruitment of AI guest teachers by July 28.

Eligible candidates should possess qualifications such as BCA, B.Sc.

(Computer Science), B.Sc.

(Information Technology), Diploma in Computer Science, PGDCA, or other prescribed computer-related certifications.

Each guest teacher will receive an honorarium of Rs20,000 per month.

The AI programme will be implemented in newly approved government high schools, NSQF schools, and existing single-sector schools.

The initiative is intended to prepare students for emerging technologies by introducing them to concepts such as artificial intelligence, digital innovation, and computational thinking.

The Education Department believes that integrating AI into the school curriculum will help students develop 21st-century skills, including creativity, critical thinking, and analytical abilities, while improving their readiness for higher education and future employment opportunities in technology-driven industries.

The department has also instructed that AI guest teachers undergo specialized training during the first week of August before classroom teaching begins.

The move comes as the state government intensifies efforts to modernize government school education by strengthening digital infrastructure and introducing technology-oriented courses.

Education officials said the introduction of AI is expected to bridge the technology gap between government and private schools, giving students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds greater exposure to advanced technologies.

The programme is also aligned with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on skill-based learning and emerging technologies.
