Vijayawada Launches Initiative to Become Model Town for Road Safety
Vijayawada is starting a project to make its roads safer.
The city wants to reduce deaths and injuries from crashes by 10 to 15 percent.
Government departments, police, schools, private groups and NGOs will work together.
The project will find and fix dangerous road locations called black spots.
Traffic rules will be enforced more strictly in zero-tolerance zones.
Students and the public will learn about helmets, seat belts, lane discipline and pedestrian safety.
About 70,000 students in 105 schools and 14 colleges will join the awareness campaign.
First responders will also learn how to give quick help to people hurt in crashes.
The Ideal Town on Road Safety project aims to reduce accident deaths and injuries by 10 to 15 percent.
District collector Dr G. Lakshmisha called for coordinated participation from government departments, police, schools, private organisations, NGOs and other stakeholders.
Honda India Foundation is the corporate social responsibility partner, while TRAX — Road Safety NGO is implementing the project.
The initiative will address engineering, enforcement, education and emergency care, including improvements at identified accident-prone black spots.
Awareness programmes will cover about 70,000 students across 105 schools and 14 colleges, alongside first-responder training.
