Supreme Court contempt notice to LDA Vice-Chairman in Lucknow fire
A building in Lucknow was meant to be a home, but instead it was used as a coaching centre where students came to study.
In June, a fire broke out in that building and 15 students tragically died.
Many years earlier, in 2016, city officials had ordered the building to be demolished because it was being used the wrong way.
But that order was cancelled just a couple of months later for a technical reason.
After that, nobody did anything, and the building kept being used for classes and business.
After the fire, the Supreme Court of India, the country's highest court, became involved.
The Court was upset that the building was used for so long without proper action.
It sent a formal warning, called a contempt notice, to the Vice-Chairman of the Lucknow Development Authority, the official in charge of city planning.
The Vice-Chairman must now come to court and explain why he should not be punished.
The Court also asked for the police investigation report and said similar safety issues across the whole country need attention.

In a March 25, 2026 order, the Supreme Court expanded the matter nationwide, making all states and Union Territories parties to the proceedings.
