Karnataka allocates Cabinet portfolios as Cauvery bandh looms
Karnataka is a big state in India.
The chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar, gave different jobs to his ministers, like looking after schools, health, and food supplies.
He gave the jobs just before the state assembly's monsoon meeting began.
At the same time, Karnataka and its neighbour Tamil Nadu are arguing about water from the Cauvery river.
Tamil Nadu says it is not getting enough water.
A water committee told Karnataka to send 12,000 units of water to Tamil Nadu every day for two weeks.
Farmers in Karnataka are upset because they say the water is already flowing to Tamil Nadu.
Some groups announced a one-day shutdown of the state to protest.
Tamil Nadu's chief minister asked the Supreme Court to help make sure Karnataka sends the water.
Leaders on both sides are still trying to settle the fight over the river.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar allocated portfolios to the expanded Council of Ministers on Wednesday, a day before the Legislative Assembly's monsoon session begins Thursday.
Shivakumar retained key portfolios including Finance, Intelligence, Information, Law, Justice & Human Rights and Cabinet Affairs, with all unallocated portfolios remaining with him.
A statewide bandh called by Kannada Okkuta, led by Vatal Nagaraj, is scheduled for August 13 from 6 am to 6 pm over the Cauvery water dispute and demands on projects like Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority endorsed a direction requiring Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12, about 15.55 TMC ft.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved the Supreme Court over Karnataka's release of Cauvery water, while Karnataka farmer groups opposed the release order at a demonstration in Mysuru.
