Moroccan Centrist Party Tops Parliament Vote After Football Boost
Morocco held an election for its Parliament.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party, or PAM, won the most seats.
It received 97 seats out of 395.
The party gained attention after football official Fouzi Lekjaa joined it.
Lekjaa helped lead Morocco’s football team to a historic World Cup semifinal.
He may be considered for prime minister, but the king will choose the prime minister from the winning party.
The new government will work on jobs, public services and preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
Voter participation was lower than in the previous election.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party won 97 of Parliament’s 395 seats, rising from 87 in 2021.
The National Rally of Independents came second with 66 seats, followed by the Istiqlal Party with 65.
Football federation chief Fouzi Lekjaa joined the winning party before the election and is viewed as a possible prime minister.
The new Parliament will oversee economic policies and preparations for Morocco’s role in the 2030 World Cup.
Turnout fell to about 38%, compared with roughly 50% in the previous election.
