Jalgaon Excise Seizes ₹2.59 Crore in Contraband
From April to September, excise officers in Jalgaon seized illegal goods worth about ₹2.59 crore.
They registered 1,166 cases and identified 956 suspects.
The seized items included materials used to make illegal liquor, illicit liquor and toddy.
The department said it seized more goods than during the same months last year.
People bought slightly more country liquor than they had the year before.
Beer sales rose by about 29%.
Sales of foreign liquor went down by about 40%.
The excise superintendent said higher taxes discouraged people from buying it.
The Jalgaon division of the State Excise Department seized goods worth ₹2,59,13,227 from April to September.
Officials registered 1,166 cases involving 956 suspects, compared with 1,040 cases and 1,014 suspects in the same period last year.
Seizures included 5,37,790 litres of chemical wash, 21,381 litres of illicitly distilled liquor and 3,196 litres of toddy.
Country liquor sales rose 3.18% to 59,28,644 litres, while beer sales increased 29.27% to 56,48,765 litres.
Foreign liquor sales fell 40.30% to 20,17,648 litres; the excise superintendent attributed the decline to higher taxes discouraging purchases.
