West Bengal Issues 23,000 CAA Citizenship Certificates, Hearings Near End
West Bengal is checking applications from people who want citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
So far, officials have given certificates to 23,000 people.
About 2.30 lakh people applied.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the remaining application hearings will finish soon.
He said instructions have been sent to government authorities.
The chief minister also said Governor R.N. Ravi approved a new public-safety law.
The law allows people who attack police to be arrested.
It also allows the government to recover money for damage to public property.
A notification about the law was issued on Monday.
West Bengal has issued citizenship certificates to 23,000 people under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The certificates were issued from approximately 2.30 lakh applications received by the state.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said hearings on the remaining CAA applications will soon be completed.
Adhikari said necessary directives have been sent to the authorities to finish the hearings.
Governor R.N. Ravi approved a new law allowing arrests for attacks on police and recovery of costs for public-property damage.
