When Hockey Became India's Identity: The Olympic Golden Era

Long ago, before cricket and many other sports, hockey was the sport that made India famous around the world.

The Indian men's hockey team was so strong that it won eight Olympic gold medals, more than any other team in hockey history.

Before India became independent, the team won Olympic gold in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

A famous player named Major Dhyan Chand amazed everyone with his wonderful stick skills.

In 1948, just one year after India became an independent country, the team won gold in London by beating Great Britain 4-0.

That win was very special because it showed the world that free India could be a winner.

India kept winning Olympic gold in 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1980.

Then the team waited a very long time for another Olympic medal.

Finally, India won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games and again at the Paris 2024 Games, bringing new glory to the sport's golden history.
