West Bengal prepares TET for in-service primary teachers
West Bengal is preparing an eligibility test for some teachers already working in primary schools.
The test is called the Teacher Eligibility Test, or TET.
The Supreme Court said certain teachers hired before a 2009 education law must pass it.
A later court order gave teachers three years to complete the requirement.
The deadline is August 31, 2028.
The state has asked education authorities to plan the exams.
About 90,000 teachers who teach classes 1 to 8 may need to take them.
Teachers with five years or less left in service do not have to qualify.
The West Bengal School Education Department asked authorities to arrange the Teacher Eligibility Test for in-service primary teachers.
The move follows Supreme Court directions making TET qualification mandatory for certain teachers appointed before the 2009 RTE Act.
Teachers must obtain the qualification by August 31, 2028, after the deadline was extended from two years to three years.
The Supreme Court directed states to conduct TET periodically, preferably twice a year, with roughly six months between exams.
Around 90,000 teachers of classes 1 to 8 may need to take the exam, while teachers with five years or less remaining service are exempt.
