Long ago, in the countryside of Australia, there is a giant, ancient rock called Hanging Rock.
In the story, a girls' boarding school called Appleyard College goes there for a Valentine's Day picnic in the year 1900.
The girls have to wear heavy, hot clothes and follow strict rules, even though it is a holiday.
While exploring, four of the group — students Miranda, Marion, and Irma, and their teacher Miss McCraw — suddenly vanish.
A fifth girl, Edith, tries to warn them, but they do not listen.
Everyone searches, but the missing four cannot be found.
Later, Irma is found alive, but she cannot remember what happened.
The other three are never found, and the school slowly empties out.
The book never explains the mystery, and readers are left to decide for themselves what really happened.
