Speaker to Hear AIADMK Defection Disqualification Case on August 4
The Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker, J.C.T. Prabhakar, is going to hold a meeting on August 4 to decide if four lawmakers should lose their seats.
These lawmakers used to be part of the AIADMK party, but after winning elections with AIADMK’s help, they left the party and joined another group called TVK.
AIADMK’s leader, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, asked the Speaker to remove them from the Assembly because the law says you can’t switch parties after being elected.
The lawmakers have already spoken to the Speaker and gave reasons for leaving, but the Speaker wants to hear more.
The meeting will also let the AIADMK leader decide if he will speak in person.
The Speaker will decide what to do after the meeting.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.T. Prabhakar has scheduled a hearing for August 4 to address disqualification petitions against four former AIADMK MLAs who joined TVK.
The four legislators—Maragatham Kumaravel, Jayakumar, Sathyabama, and Isakki Subbiah—resigned from AIADMK after winning elections with its support and later joined the Tamil Maanila Congress (TVK).
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami filed a petition under the anti‑defection law, arguing the MLAs voluntarily abandoned the party on whose backing they were elected.
The MLAs previously appeared before the Speaker and submitted explanations, but the matter has been postponed to a second hearing on August 4.
The Speaker has invited Palaniswami to attend the proceedings, while AIADMK continues to press for early disqualification of the four MLAs.
